A Director ID is a new requirement from ASIC for the following groups:

  1. directors of a company;
  2. registered Australian body;
  3. registered foreign company; or
  4. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation

It is something that will be kept forever for that entity, and it is a security measure for ASIC to help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.

Existing directors need to apply prior to 30 November 2022.  New directors appointed prior to 04 April 2022 need to apply within 28 days of appointment.  After this date, those directors intending to apply for directorship will need a Directors ID prior to appointment.

A new governing body, the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) is responsible for the administration of the Directors ID’s.

It is a criminal offence not to have a Directors ID when you are supposed to have one.  ASIC will be enforcing offences under the Corporations Act 2001.
